YOUNG GOODMAN BROWN

Observations/Impressions of Story

Young Goodman Brown is someone who goes through a change on how he views everyone around him after going through the woods with an old  man who is shown to be as the devil. The author of the book uses very explanatory and detailed dictation when hes not showing dialogue. When he does show dialogue he keeps it simple and short.

Question

Was his walk in the woods just a dream or did he really experience it all? Are the people around him really how they described them while in his walk in the woods?

ANCIENT STORIES

Language Similarities/Differences

The Similarities in the language in the commentary were somewhat the same to the language you would normally use in everyday conversation to tell a story. Without much detail and just a straight forward explanation. http://kstrom.net/isk/arvol/buffpipe.html
However in the original story, the main difference was the type of words used and the amount of detail given which would normally not happen in normal conversation.http://www.souledout.org/earthday/nativamer/whitecalfwoman.html

Should The Story Be Told Word For Word? Or Meaning Lost In Retelling?

I think it is important to have the story told word for word every time its told to keep the story's original meaning but in retelling the story it can get better than the original by adding more detail or thought into it. The meaning could either be lost, distorted or enhanced all depending on how the story is told and passed down.

Assignment #1

Reasons For Taking This Course

I think its clear to most students and I that the reason we are taking this course is because we have to in order to get credits for school. Other than that, other reasons I'm taking this class is to further my knowledge in American Literature throughout the year and learn new things I didn't know before.

Excited About/ Nervous About

Something I'm excited to see is how this class will be later on since this isn't a normal English 3 class where we go through normal lessons that everyone else is doing in their English class. Having said that it also makes me nervous because I don't know what were going to do in the future and I still cant see if this will be a class I dislike or like yet.

Goals For Course

I think the only goal I have for this class is to get a grade I feel satisfied with.

Knowledge/Thinking

Every class has a way to improve your knowledge or the way you think. In English reading writing and listening are ways I think my knowledge and thinking will improve.
